TOLEDO, Ohio – May 26, 2005 – John Wetzel, Jr. of Toledo, an eighth-grade student at Maumee Valley Country Day School, has been awarded a $500 scholarship to attend a two-week mathematics-science-technology program this summer at Michigan State University.

He has also been awarded a renewable Claver Scholarship of $1,000 to attend St. John's Jesuit High School.

John's summer classes at MSU will be Chaos and Fractals and Mechanical Engineering. His special clinic will be digital video production.

Academic excellence scholarships have been awarded to the following area high school seniors by Owens Community College's board of trustees.

The awards are $2,000 over two years; applicants are full-time students who maintain a 3.0 grade point average each semester.

The scholarship winners are Toledo residents Diane Niedbalski of Alliance Academy of Toledo, Sydney Robinson of Bowsher High School, Victoria Metzger of Central Catholic High School, Robin Kiser of Libbey High School, Sherhonda Pressley of Life Skills Center of Toledo, Antoinette Gary of Polly Fox Academy, Nicole Harris of Rogers High School, Zach Wazny of St. Francis de Sales High School, Sara Wismer of St. Ursula Academy, Ashley Obarski of Start High School, Jennifer Kunz of Toledo Technology Academy, Crystal Dantzer of Waite High School, Janel Meinka of Whitmer High School, and Donna Miller of Woodward High School.

Awards also went to David Damasco of Anthony Wayne High School, Amanda Fesh of Maumee High School, Kaleigh Gottschalk of Eastwood High School, Melissa Hofbauer of Perrysburg Digital Academy, Andrew Beat, Jr. of Perrysburg High School, and Lyndsey Schad of Toledo Christian High School.

Also receiving the scholarships are Ashley Foster of Springfield High School, Shannon Dotson of Swanton High School, Daniel Smith of Toledo School for the Arts, Eric Ade of Sylvania Southview High School, and Jocelyn Cousino of Sylvania Northview High School.

Other scholarship winners include Christie Toska of Rossford High School, Cassie Kirsch of Woodmore High School, Katie Brentlinger of Cardinal Stritch High School, Shelly Lindsey of Clay High School, Katelyn Rossler of Genoa High School, Aaron Holleran of Lake High School, David True of Maumee Valley Country Day, Brooke Chidester of Otsego High School, and Jennifer Goldacker of Penta Career Center.

Artur Maryamov of Sylvania, a senior at Sylvania Northview High School, has been awarded an academic scholarship of $850 by the Ohio Housing Authorities Conference. The award was announced at the 2005 OHAC spring conference in Cleveland earlier this month.

Artur accepted the award at a presentation held May 13 at the Lucas Metropolitan Housing Authority in Toledo.

He is one of six students in the state to receive a scholarship from OHAC. His plans are to study computer science and engineering.

Richard T. Gosser Scholarships of $10,000 each have been awarded to the following area high school students from Ohio United Auto Workers families.

Kristen Bury, Southview High School, ranked first in her class of 299 students. Her mother Linda Bury is a member of UAW Local 12 at St. Vincent Mercy Medical Center.

Jessica Eisenhauer, Perrysburg High School, ranked 11th in a class of 352. Her father, Carl Eisenhauer is a member of UAW Local 14 at GM Powertrain.

Kyle Roebuck, Ida High School in Ida, Mich., ranked first in a class of 131 students. His father Neil Roebuck is a member of UAW Local 14 at GM Powertrain.

Adam Wagner, Rossford High School, ranked first in a class of 137. His mother Lauren Wagner is a member of UAW Local 12 at St. Vincent Mercy Medical Center.

Alexander Aossey, Clay High School, Oregon, ranked 10th in a class of 305. HIs father Michael Aossey is a member of UAW Local 12 at Daimler Chrysler Jeep.

A seven-member board of judges made the awards selections. The scholarships are made in honor of the late UAW vice president and regional director, Richard T. Gosser.
