Trip offers unique opportunity for students
AKRON -- Eighth-graders from the Ohio Distance and Electronic Learning Academy
(OHDELA) traveled to Washington D.C. for a unique class experience at the end of May.
According to OHDELA Principal Tim Spencer, 80 students went on the trip, which coincided
with social studies state standards the students were learning, as well as provided an impactful
learning opportunity for all involved.
“The trip provided students an opportunity to see history in action and to provide them with a
chance to meet other OHDELA students,” said Spencer. “This was the seventh year the students
went on a trip. I would say from a staff perspective, the best thing about the trip was the social
and emotional growth observed on this trip. Students would tell you the trip to Gettysburg and
the dinner/dance on the boat tour was also a highlight.”
OHDELA is a tuition-free online school for students in grades K-12. OHDELA provides
Internet-based, live learning sessions instructed by state-certified teachers for students. Many of
the students who went on the trip did not know each other, according to Spencer. Students not
only reside from Akron, but all over the state of Ohio.
The trip consisted of visits to Arlington National Cemetery, Gettysburg, the Library of Congress,
Washington National Cathedral, the Vietnam Veterans’ Memorial, the Lincoln Memorial and
more. The students also took a Potomac River cruise.
“A highlight of the trip was student understanding of our country and the historical value that
represents,” said Spencer. “Student bonding and growth was exhibited. OHDELA students
are amongst the top in terms of behavior and interaction with others. It is a rare opportunity to
observe 80 students from different backgrounds and locations across the state of Ohio grow and
develop friendships that could last a life time.”
